The RLSS are the leading provider of the national vocational beach lifeguard award. On this course you gain the skills needed to work as an RNLI lifeguard and it serves as a high level outdoor activity instructor first aid award.
Find a courseThis is the highest standard ILS Beach Lifeguard qualification recognised worldwide. You must hold an ILS recognised qualification to work as a surf instructor, coasteering guide or RNLI lifeguard in the UK. This qualification will also allow you to work in water safety teams at events such as open water swims and more. This is the preferred qualification to become an RNLI lifeguard.

Swim 400m in a 25m pool in under 7 minutes 30 seconds
Run 200m in Under 40 seconds on a beach
Have previous basic experience of the beach and ocean environment
We can organise accommodation for you with our partners but this is not included in the course price
All the equipment is provided but if you would like to bring your own then feel free!
The course lasts 6 days (9am – 5pm)
This is split in to 5 days learning and 1 day assessment
Your NVBLQ award is valid for 2 years initially then you will be expected to do a proficiency every year (every 2 years with RLSS)
During this exciting course you will gain the knowledge and skills required to provide professional beach patrolling and surf rescue services. Alongside this you will learn basic life support, practical first aid protocols and gain theoretical understanding of these topics. The Surf Lifeguard course is physically demanding and will include swimming, paddling rescue boards, running and lifting. We will teach you a variety of units throughout 40 hours of guided learning using the latest and best training resources available. All units must be successfully passed to attain the qualification.
